Electrochemical Energy Storage Engineer / Researcher (Focus on Li-Ion)
We are hiring a Research Engineer to support our work in lithium-ion battery testing and optimized electrochemical energy storage for our Advanced battery department. The position is part of a growing R&D team headed by a professor in electrochemistry and power sources. It is supposed to contribute to applied research and technology development for batteries in advanced energy storage systems.
About the Role
You will be engaged in cutting-edge research aimed at enhancing the power performance of lithium-ion battery technologies and pushing its boundaries. This includes exploring innovative concepts for optimizing battery service and life in various types of storage systems, implementing innovative methods for enhancing performance and safety and for battery monitoring, and contributing to the development of next-generation solutions for efficient electrochemical energy storage. The role involves both experimental and analytical work, with strong emphasis on scientific rigor and real-world applications.
This position is also suitable for academically trained researchers seeking to apply their knowledge in an area of booming business interest internationally. You will have the opportunity to work on well-defined R&D tasks being part of the strategic aims of a growing international company, collaborate closely with a senior academic lead, and contribute creatively to projects with strong scientific foundations and profitable industrial targets.
Key Responsibilities
- Assess the electrochemical behavior of lithium-ion systems (LFP, NMC and others) and identify optimization opportunities including battery monitoring and management.
- Design experiments to identify performance limitations and propose development of targeted improvement methods.
- Manage and maintain batteries under short and long term testing.
- Specify and execute test protocols for evaluating charging strategies, aging behavior, and cell/battery reliability in particular applications.
- Provide technical input and support to ongoing lithium-ion R&D projects.
- Analyze and interpret experimental data, draft regular reports, and discuss the results, generate and maintain clear technical documentation.
- Assist in developing new experimental and test methods and contribute to research planning.
- Participate actively in regular company technical discussions and contribute to building up the team's shared knowledge base.
- Stay in touch with the global battery community, monitor the scientific literature and the current developments in lithium-based and other batteries ,stay informed about the recent industrial trends and maintain up-to-date expertise in the field.
Candidate Profile
- Master’s degree in any of the following areas: Electrochemistry, Chemistry, Physics, Electrical Engineering, Electronics, or a related discipline. A PhD would be a strong advantage.
- Practical or academic experience and personal contributions in:
o Electrochemical energy storage systems,
o Lithium based or other battery testing, modeling, or diagnostics,
o Battery system safety and reliability maintenance and integration,
o Electronics relevant to battery performance, management, and control.
- Experience in data analysis.
- Proficiency in at least one programming language would be a benefit.
- Strong analytical and critical thinking skills with a firsthand approach to lab work in an R&D team.
- Ability to clearly present technical findings in written and verbal form.
Language Requirements

- Bulgarian – highly desirable, due to the working environment and location
- German or other – advantageous
